A package seal exists to answer one question — was this package opened after it was sealed — and the traditional answers all share a weakness: they are static. Shrink wrap, a tamper sticker, a glued flap: each is a structure that a determined person can reproduce, and in a supply chain where packages change hands several times, an opened and resealed unit arrives at the shelf indistinguishable from a sealed one. The static mark certifies a moment, not a history. The RFID answer changes the object itself, permanently, at the moment of opening.
The tamper-evident tag is built to be destroyed by use. The antenna inside the tag is routed through the seal or the closure so that opening the package physically breaks the conductor; from then on the tag no longer reads cleanly, and the next interrogation sees a different, damaged response. The change is irreversible, which is the property that makes it evidence: a tag cannot be un-broken, so an opened package carries its opened state in its own hardware. The system records the state at the next read — a retail scan, a consumer tap — with time and location.
The anti-transfer tag answers a different question: was this label removed from one item and re-applied to another? Its construction makes removal destructive — fragile materials and adhesives engineered so that peeling breaks the tag or its coupling, either physically or functionally. The value is binding: a genuine label on a substitute item is only meaningful if the label cannot travel. Anti-transfer is the tag that makes the one-to-one bond an engineering property rather than a process promise.
The sensor tag carries a third kind of record — the conditions the package travelled through. Temperature, humidity and seal state are captured at intervals into the tag's memory, and the record is read out at the destination or at any checkpoint. Where the first two tags answer yes/no questions about tampering, the sensor tag answers a question about the environment: was this unit kept within its band, and for how long did it wander outside? The data is a time series, and the interrogation is the moment the time series is pulled.
The state machine that ties them together is the first-open workflow. A tag is encoded with its unique identity and initialized as unopened at manufacture. Through distribution, bulk reads track movement without touching state — a portal, a carton read, a shelf sweep all just log presence. The first time the package is opened, the tag undergoes its irreversible change and its status flips to opened. That event, not the physical act, is what the system records; every later read carries the opened fact forward, and a consumer tap at the end of the chain sees the full history in one answer.
The three constructions are often blended in practice. A tag can be tamper-evident and anti-transfer and sensor-equipped — the broken-antenna mechanism and the fragile adhesive and a temperature log all in one package. What decides the mix is the question the brand actually faces: refill attacks need the first-open state; label migration needs the bond; cold-chain protection needs the log. Each mechanism is cheap at tag scale and expensive as a process assurance, which is the argument for putting the assurance in the hardware at all.
The honest limit of the whole family is what the state change does not tell you. The tamper-evident tag reports that opening happened; it does not report what was inside after the opening. The sensor tag reports the environment; it does not certify the contents. Both are evidence machines — they move the burden of proof from a human inspecting a seal to hardware that records a fact — and the review of that fact still belongs to the system reading the tag. The construction decides which question is recorded; the workflow decides which question was worth asking in the first place.
